It is very unusual to need new cams. However camshaft oil seal leaks are more common. Depending on the types of cam seals fitted they need to be fitted the right way around, i.e. the ones on one end of the engine are different to the other end. Have you done any work on the drivers door recently? A chance you've dislodged the switch on the door lock? That would mean central locking not working (nor telling the car it's locked / unlocked hence alarm it stopping and engine immobilised.) I haven't done any work at all over the last two years...

I had this on my old 214 everytime I disconnected the battery. The only way to stop the alarm was to close the drivers side door then lock and unlock it. If your central locking isn't working I'd guess that's a fault with the sensor on the door lock (and possibly means what I said above won't work)...

I had a flat battery on my 214, disconnected the battery and charged it as I all ways do and had no problems before until now, connected the battery and now the central locking wont work and the alarm goes off and you can not start the engine.
