The reflectors will be different. Fog lights are designed to give a bright wide spread of light to pick out the kerb and the immediate road ahead. Yes, there is a bulb in the clock so it could well be that. I had assumed you had just lost some of the bars that make up the numbers.

It's very simple actually. Just slide a flat but not sharp bladed object (something like a plastic spreader you get with tile grout) behind the wood trim at the curved end near the passenger door and gently prize it out. The R3 suffers from leaks around the rear lights. Check the seals around the light fittings.
