Re: Rover 416 Tourer on BBC series “Mum”

It does seem strangely incapable of putting its driver in a good mood though!

Re: Engine won't start

Maybe a slip of the keyboard there? Shouldn't we be looking for mid-stroke to align the camshafts to? In which case, a pair of equal length rods (I use a pair of used head bolts) in 1 & 2 bores would sit at identical heights. The manuals are a bit vague on the pulley markings. I have deduced that 'I...

Re: Potential Head Problem

A decent garage will be able to do both a cylinder compression test and a cooling system pressure test; that's more professional than just making a guess! The through bolt passages also act as a oil return so there could be a leak between one of those and water jacket, but it would be nice to elimi...

Re: 220 (air con) top hose split

It's such a pity mgroverpartfinder.com does not host the hierarchical parts lists and official exploded diagrams in the manner of Rimmer's, given that they are the official production source.

Re: Rover 220GSI MOT fail

Apparently on the 214 sub-frame, those heavyweight supporting struts at each end of the steering rack subframe are plated over but not sealed at all, so salty road water gets trapped at the bottom around the threaded nut where the front lower arms bolt on and so rot is prone to develop there too. T...

Re: Why does my wiper catch on the bonnet

New ones didn't. My view is that the die-cast component out to the knuckle creeps under the continuous reaction to the pressure on the wiper blade, over a long period, and so curls away from the glass enough to catch. Atmospheric temperature cycling might not help either. I did bend one of mine back...

My music mostly spirals inwards.

But I do park next to a Jazz. I'll have a look at the wheels next time.

Surely it's a cross flow rad? my K Series M Reg is!
I think I see what you're thinking.
But when warmed up, the return from the nearside of the rad is still pretty hot to the touch - a bit above thermostat opening temperature at least.

Re: Headgasket

The answer to the rad question is top is hot , middle to bottom is cold . If the heat's getting all the way across then the rad isn't impeding flow, the thermostat's open, and the pump is providing pressure. Your muck in the expansion tank could be residual leftovers washed through the system.

Well done for tracking down the photographic evidence.

Even I've got all those bits! (And I have to keep moving them out of the way.)
Are there any photos illustrating the MOT concerns about the rear suspension and fuel lines?

Re: Headgasket

As the bottom hose is the return from the radiator, I'd be quite pleased if mine was cold! Can you feel heat creeping across the radiator as the engine comes up to temperature? The pump should be generating just enough head to produce a dribble of flow from the small return hose between the top hose...

Fair enough. Still a huge shame. It was somebody's pride and joy, clearly. Maybe I'm just taken with how the NFR paint is gleaming in the sunshine :sad That, and the lack of rust, is what caught my eye too. NFR seems particularly prone to lacquer peel for some reason. I guess they'll give it a few ...

It does deserve it, considering the condition of its wheel arches. 'Just' spanner work between it and survival!
