As a matter of interest, does the SOHC 216 GTi have any performance advantage over the 216 GSi? Just curious.

The suspension will be stiffer and it's got bigger anti roll bars.

A lot will depend on how it's been driven and looked after; it looks very clean under the bonnet.

There are 30 taxed on the road at the moment.

[I'm not sellling it by the way]

Short ratio box on the GTi - definitely on the DOHC but not sure about the SOHC.

A GTi TC pulls around 4000rpm @ 70mph, a 216GSi SOHC pulls 3,500rpm @ 70mph. Not sure about the SOHC GTi but it would make sense, as the short ratio box is designed to keep the engine on the boil and there's a second torque peak that starts rising about 4000rpm(the first one peaks at 3000rpm).

Interesting to note that approx max torque is achieved at 3000RPM!

Do you have a chart for a T.C?

Actually on the second line of power data from the bottom, you'll see peak torque at 5535rpm, which is pretty much the manufacturer's quoted value. It's slightly higher than the peak at 3000rpm.

No - and that's a plot for my own car, hence no plot for a TC as I don't own one. Notice the few lb.ft of torque discrepancy with the official figures - now hopefully restored after a Terraclean - all the flat spots went after the treatment.

The short gearing on the DOHC makes them unnecessarily "busy" on a cruise. It's a problem that seems to afflict all Rovers of that era, with the exception of diesels.

Yes the SOHC is much nicer to cruise on the Mway and as I have half a plan to fit a DOHC and mate it to a wide ratio box in my Red GTi [health/energy permitting] I'm after a butchers at a DOHC torque/power curve: did Rover ever publish one?

An alternative plan is to turn her into a hillclimb car, in which case box & engine would stay as they are. :D

P.S
It sounds like you're used to driving modern diesels with their 6/7 speed gearbox's Richard?

As an owner of an R8 diesel, (turbo Peugeot variety), M-Way speeds 65-70 mph are achieved at about 2,500 rpm in 5th gear - which is just before the Turbo comes online, so max fuel efficiency as well. Red line is only 4,800rpm though.
