Screeching belt on 214i

#1 Post by Hammond » Thu Jan 05, 2017 9:13 pm

No noise when it's idle but one of the belts is screeching occasionally when changing through the gears.
It's had a new timing belt in 2014 around 15,000 miles ago.
What else should I be looking for?

Have you got power steering?

If not then it can only be the alternator.

For the former manoeuvre it onto full-lock , for the latter put on as much electrical load as possible - HRW, lights etc
I like Twin Cams.... and Single Cams

belts power steering and alternator ( check if they are cracking up etc ) timing belt , water pump and tensioner and you'll better better off with a cam locking tool ( draper on ebay ) straightforward job really.

:) :) :D

Yes to power steering and meant to say that the alternator belt was also changed in 2014.
But will try both of those independently.
Cheers

Putting chalk on the pully is another way of seeing if that particular belt is slipping. Pattern belts around in the 90's were renowned for this, sometimes sold by the dealers themselves; Ford In Chesterfield and Nissan in Nottm from memory. :mad

It will be a vee shaped belt, not a toothed timing belt; the chalk gives the belt more purchase in the pully.
