#1 Post by Kenaba » Thu Dec 21, 2017 9:20 am

Hi can anyone help diagnose my problem
Whilst my wife was out Christmas shopping the car just died a kind couple pushed her off the high st into a side road she managed to start it again but only got 100yds then it died again.Called out rac he checked Petrol pump distributer plugs injectors.said there is spark at plugs got my wife to turn over engine and said there was petrol he thought it could be the ECU ? If there's fuel and spark why doesn't it try to catch nothing Any help would be appreciated

If you are getting fuel and a spark, then it suggests a timing issue. It's no good having a spark and fuel if they occur at the wrong time in the engines cycle. I would be inclined to check out the crank sensor, or any other timing sensor that tells the ECU exactly when to trigger the spark. I'm slightly surprised that the man from the RAC didn't try and check if that was a possible issue.

I had a 214 gsi in 1990 and it exhibited exactly the same symptoms and it was a faulty crank sensor , caused by a slight antifreeze drip that came off the clip on the hose above dripping on it . it was changed and then fine after that.

Rotor arm? Cheap and easy, so worth a try.

Try a new rotor arm instead of cleaning the original. Can’t be more than £5-10. I have had similar problems before and a new rotor arm resolved.
