Machine gun type clicking from Dizzy

#1 Post by tonyinbeds » Fri Aug 21, 2020 2:26 pm

A new one for me...
When I crank it over to start it makes a machine gun repetitive clicking noise.
Initial thoughts were fuel pump leak and refilling as it eventually started after 4 goes.
Just cranked it over and filmed it and clearly coming from the Dizzy.
Any ideas or links to previous threads on this all welcome. :)
Cheers

Are you sure it's coming from the dizzy or starter motor? If you can hear it quite loudly inside the car, it's more likely the main relay dropping out as in - it engages, the starter fires, the battery is dead so the battery voltage drops, then the main relay clicks out and the process starts again - so you get a fast quite loud clicking inside the car. Had it a few times - new battery required, or make sure yours is capable of holding a charge and charge it.

Thanks, I'll charge the battery anyway but I put my hand on the starter while someone else turned it over and could feel the vibration. I was misled earlier as doing it by myself and saw the dizzy move. Noise is not in the car. :)

The vibration you felt was probably the starter solenoid failing to stay engaged because the starter motor sucked enough from the battery to drop the voltage, much as surmised earlier with the relay. The relay powers the solenoid, the solenoid operates the motor power contact and shifts the pinion into engagement with the flywheel ring gear.

Do you have a multimeter? Take some readings from the battery and let us know.

No I need to get a mm.

I charged the battery all day yesterday up to 14V and still clicking so excludes battery.

Just researching a bit more and found this... https://youtu.be/xgoqd9myj38 so not too difficult.

Also this https://youtu.be/tx4H5ttxbJ0 - I will go and check this first before taking SM off.

Seems like a good way to prevent wasted effort.

Does anyone recommend a good make of Multi Meter please?

I think they’ll all be much of a muchness. I don’t think mine was particularly expensive but it works well and does the job.
