Rear Spring - Rubber Ring - Need Advice

#1 Post by JEASPEKE » Mon Jul 05, 2021 4:56 pm

After MOT in June (passed) this rubber fell out from above the offside spring top mounting. :blink

What is the best way to replace it, can you get these parts? Or is it part of the top mounting repair plate that I see you can get online?
(The car is a 1990 216GTi, 5 Door, DOHC)

I guess would need to do both sides and may as well change dampers while I am in there

Bet Craig knows...

Looks more like a spring cap, (wraps around the spring to save damage when fitting). Personally I wouldn’t worry about it, but if you want to send me a pic of your entire strut I’ll see if anything looks out of place.

My numbers all over the tinterweb or I can come see on Sunday if at gaydon.

Not exactly easy to judge scale off that pic.

Thanks, Craig, yes it did look like it was just placed snug around the top coil of the spring.

No comment on it by the MOT'er; maybe he wiggled it.

It is about 4 ins in diameter, same size as the spring.

See you at Gaydon, unless it pours down!.

It prevent metal-to-metal contact between the top coil of the spring and the spring pan.

Sounds like a good candidate for 3D printing if there are no NOS parts available :)

Thanks John

Might be able to use a rubber hose cut along its length.

Good excuse to replace the rear dampers as well.

See you Sunday
