Newbie with R8 416.

#1 Post by Marv_666 » Sun May 06, 2018 6:58 am

Hi all,
just picked up a late R8 416 SLi to use as my MG Metro appears to have dissolved in the rain!
Not driven an R8 since the new 200's used as lone cars from the Land Rover dealership I worked at.
Will no doubt end up giving it a few tweaks, but want to try and stay fairly sensible this time!?

Sensible... Famous last words! Good choice though, I'm fairly new here also. Twin cam or single? Sad to hear about the metro, good luck with it!

I've not even opened the bonnet, but assume it's a single cam.
Cam covers look ideal for a bit of detailing, so that will probably get done unless the bay is a mess.

:welcome

It should be a SOHC unless somebody has done a sneaky upgrade. Cam covers do respond to a new coat of crinkle finish paint but you have to mask the bare ribs or coat them with Vaseline before you spray.

We should be able to help with most questions.

Looking forward to seeing you out and about this year.

Brief search led me to believe the 216 and 416 GTi and the coupe were twin cam, and the rest single?
Done an 8v Metro cover before, VHT black and block flatting, hard work but a nice result.

216 GTi 5-door and 3-door 'GTi Twin Cam', 416 GTi4-door and many export market Coupe 1.6s were Twin Cams.

The 216 3-door GTi was a SOHC, as was the UK 216 Coupe until the introduction of the phase2.

Many export markets didn't want a 3 model Coupe line-up and the 2.0 often popped into a higher tax band making them expensive. In that case only the Turbo made sense. The UK wanted the lower entry point of the SOHC but the 2.0 M-Series was priced and specced to get more people into it than the costly-to-buy-from-Honda D16.

Hope that makes sense.
