Which is the best Tahiti Blue rattle can?

#1 Post by GTiJohn » Mon May 29, 2017 8:58 am

Having spent a few hours preparing my OSF wing top to (temporarily) repair flaking lacquer and faded topcoat I applied a few coats of Hycoat Tahiti Blue paint.

It went on but started to look a little lighter than it should.... in fact it's more like Henley blue than Tahiti :oops

Having looked on fleabay there are 3 Tahiti blues - one of which Holts call "93" and isn't the one I've got, which may be a clue :blushing

I think mine is the mid-70s BL colour not the later MGR shade, which would be much closer :slapme

So I'm going to have to have another go and was wondering if any of the other paint brands would be better (I've found Holts and Monroe) or should I just get the right shade of Hycoat.

Any recommendations?

PS. Stop laughing, it's not funny :laughing

:S

I believe this is paint code JRJ - is this the right one?

It's listed for R200/400 to '95 and for the later coupe/tourer/cabriolet models.

It's also apparently the paint code for HHR models - was it the same Tahiti?

We did our version of that a couple of years ago now. It was more enthralling than the film:

Well, John, the 1970s 'Tahiti Blue' was a non-metallic mid blue (not dissimilar to the background colour of this website!), so I would be worried if that's what you have ended up with!

I have used the off-the shelf Halfords 'Rover Tahiti Blue' in the past to deal with small areas on bumper corners and also spray the bottom of the tailgate where the spoiler had worn away the paint and caused rust bubbles to appear. Coverage over the grey primer was not great and several coats were needed, but by the time I had given it a couple of coats of lacquer on top as well, it looked ok. I also did a complete wing for a budget crash repair on an R3 for somebody and it didn't look too bad.
I don't know if Halfords still stock it (they ought to, as it was a popular colour for Minis and MGFs) but if they don't, many branches have an instore matching/mixing service.

I was in my local Halfords a couple of weeks ago for some Flame Red, and they certainly had *a* Tahiti Blue on the shelf. Not sure which version it was, if there are any differences. There are certainly 3 shades of Flame Red (at least!), depending on BL/Rover model and age, so I assume the same is true for the Blue as well.

That's a very good description - I'm sure nobody will notice until a can of the correct shade (JRJ) arrives during the week :blushing
