Info for a Cabriolet buyer's guide

#1 Post by GTiJohn » Wed Aug 29, 2018 5:39 pm

We've been asked by a classic car magazine to help with the preparation of a buyer's guide for the R8 Cabriolet.

They are particularly interested in common faults and spares availability. This is what I can think of off the top of my head. Pls add to it:-

R8 General
Corrosion in the rear of the sills and front and rear arches - is this any better/worse on a cabby?
K-series cooling issues...
D16 fuel relay & ignition system frailties
ALB pump failure (guaranteed !) and wheel speed sensors. How is the Bosch ABS on K-series cars?
Alarm/Immobiliser - where would we be without BobbyBrown ? ;-)

Cabby Specific
Panel availability - unique sills, side-lower and front wing panels?
Hood mechanism - manual / powered. I know the little double ballpin 'elbows' break
Replacement hoods and seals - I'm aware the metal sealing strip is NLA so how do people cope if theirs is rusted?
Unique interior trim availability - is it down the breakers or ebay?

Also apart from Rimmers, what are the best sources for spares?

Get cracking, there's only a few days to compile this :clapping

Door glass is hard to find - I broke one on our early cabrio and was lucky to track one down.**
Window lift mechanisms - I think that they're unique to the cabrio
Parts - I buy a lot on ebay or from local motor factors. Often undercutting Rimmers

** Question: do all cabrios have the front quarterlights on the door like ours?

No all, I'm sure but I can't immediately think of any that don't.

It helps guide the door glass that has no other guides. The alternative, like the Brose system in the 200 Coupe came along just too late for the Cabby and that has its own foibles anyway...

Thanks for the other info :)

Corrosion under the Windscreen A pillar trims is something I found on one of my Cabbies, rust eating away quietly un-noticed till it sneaks out under the door seal rubber.

Me and dist also found that the roof hydrolic ram mounts behind the rear quater panels
can rot too even on a car that looked tidy.

The Roof can also stop working due to fluid loss through the pipes over time, it happened
to mine and will need to be re-filled, I posted a guide with photos on here. ;)
