Front Sub frame bent
Hi
I have bent the front sub frame on the drivers side of my beloved cabbie - dont bloody ask!
I am loathe to scrap it and wondered if it was a fools errand to try and get it replaced?
I am not technical and would need to emply a mechanic but looking at costs.
Am I right in thinking this is what I need parts wise.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400912169337
I have a 1996 216 cabby on a P plate.
I have been given a steer on a mechanic so unsure what he might charge but an AA mate said as it is an older car the actual job is not a huige mare.
Any thoughts on here?
Many Thanks in advance
Danny

Re: Front Sub frame bent
There are 2 'front' subframes on R8s (and R3s) for that matter and several different variants of each so you need to be careful.
The 'real' front subframe sits ahead of the front wheels, below the radiator. The rear subframe is behind the front wheels and carries the steering rack.
The one in the photo is a rear subframe. The words '218' and 'Auto' are clearly visible so it should be correct one for your car, assuming it is a K-series and not a late-registered Honda D-series. If yours a bubble dash then it'll be a K. The same rear subframe fits a manual- and an auto- K-series.
I've seen better preserved frames but if needs must...
It's a reasonable, but not huge, job that a good mechanic with a ramp should easily be able to do but start dosing all fixings with Rustoff (or similar) asap to give you a chance of getting the old fixing out

Re: Front Sub frame bent
Many thanks for your reply.
Like i say I am not overly technical.
How do you denote a bubble dash?
Also i am guessing that as my drivers side wheel has been shunted back then it is the Front sub frame that has been bent/I need to replace?
I did take it to a mechanic who told me it was effed and he just told me to scrap it. It was only my AA mate who suggested a fix. Which I have started looking into.

Re: Front Sub frame bent
Thanks - Have you got a link for that?
Re: Front Sub frame bent
Could you provide a pic of the damage (pref with wheel removed)?
The inner end of the lower suspension arm mounts into the 'rear-front' subframe, and the shunt could have distorted the mount area.
There is also a tie rod from the lower arm, about 3/4 of the way out, which runs forward and mounts in a pocket in the 'front-front' subframe.
If the shunt was severe, the impulse pull on the tie rod may have upset the pocket of the 'front-front' subframe.
Subframe swaps are doable DIY, with assistance, but there are component variations to suit differing engine mount requirements, and also for power/manual steering options.

I took it to a mechanic last night who declined - mainly as he has no ramp and althougha Rover fanatic more a classic car resto person - he recommended another mechanic I am going to phone today to see if he will have a look.
Cheers.

Yes no problem
Re: Front Sub frame bent
I might be able to give you some help with this as Cradley is local to me. If you want i could have a look at the damage on your car and advise on what needs replacing.
