Tourer End Of Production

#1 Post by Paul_1978_yorks » Sun Jul 02, 2017 10:34 pm

There was a lovely S reg Tourer at Gaydon today, registered in Oct 1998. I thought it must be late... so when were the last R8 Tourers produced?

According to Wikipedia (always a reliable source of information! :laughing2) the Tourer was produced alongside the 2nd Generation 400 (HHR) until 1998, so the one you saw must be amongst the last ones built.

That said, very, very, rarely, cars are built but never registered. Just as an example I know of, a few years ago, an unregistered Vauxhall Viva HC came up for sale. Although built in the late 1970's, it had been kept at a dealer and never been registered with the DVLA. This would have presented a problem to any new owner as it would have been registered with a current reg mark rather than one appropriate for it's age, so would have to meet the newer modern emission standards of the time, which it didn't have a hope of doing. I'm unaware of the end result, but it can happen that a car might carry a reg number issued well after it was manufactured.

The Tourer, latterly just in 1.6K series form was built alongside the coupe and cabrio until 1998. The last off the line R8 built was a Tourer. It went to BMIHT who later sold it at one of there auctions, I think the 2003 auction. The last time it was taxed was the year it was sold. I hope someone has it squirrelled away somewhere. Own up, whoever you are!

I am collating information about Rover "firsts and lasts" and will write a article in The Viking on the subject at some point.

Would be interesting to compare the VINs and see how close the S-reg one is (mine since Sat but not for long) with the last one

Aye, make sure you have a look before it goes.

I should have said in my original post that I knew the last Tourer was 1998, but wondered when in 1998, given yours is Oct 1998. Would be interesting to see how late it actually it.

In many ways it's a shame it's going to Hungary and not staying in the UK!

Yes, John, it would be good to record the VIN to see how close it is to final production.

The highest VIN I can find on my parts database is 935118. This is a silver 416 registered on 9th September 1998 in Bristol. The last MoT expired in October 2012 and the mileage was around 120,000. DVLA no longer recognise it on the tax enquiry service, this is generally an indication that the car has been notified to them as scrapped by an authorised dismantler.

The latest Tourer registration I can find is V577POF, a green 416. Registered in September 1999 and the last MoT expired in August 2006, mileage around 54,000. Neither taxed nor SORN, so it could be lying around somewhere or it could have been broken up by somebody who is not 'authorised'! The VIN is approx. 200 lower than the highest one mentioned above. It is the only 'V' registration Tourer listed, there are also about half a dozen 'T' registrations (March-August 1999). The database is not 100% accurate, for example John's 416 is not listed.

Incidentally, a handful of 1.8VVC Tourers were made, but as far as I know, none were sold to the public: they were used as hacks by Longbridge staff (a couple were still there when MGR folded, but I don't know what became of them).

Are you sure you want it to go to Hungary? Seems like a special car. Hope he's going to look after it!
