Cabriolet prices when new...

#1 Post by Kriss707 » Sun May 20, 2018 5:55 pm

Hi,

Just a simple question, how much were the cabriolet range when new ?

I've tried searching the net but can only find prices now. I'm sure someone on here will remember their new prices.

Thanks

How did you guess Steve!
I can't find the launch prices for the cabs at the moment but Oct 95 214 was14,495 & 216 (Honda) 16,795. Power hood 695, Alloys 425, (both std on 216). ABS 1,015, leather 695. Auto on 216

By Oct 97 the 216 (K) was 16,000, 216SE 17,500 and a year later in Oct 98 216 16,325 and 216SE 17,875. Alloys 450 and power hood 700 (std on SE). ABS 500, auto 950 & paint 300.
Notice how the price of ABS has halved as it becomes more common place.

Thank you.

I searched online but couldn't find prices anywhere. It's nice to have as much info on my write-up board when I the show the car.

I've got a price list from 1991 for all Rover models including Mini and Maestro etc but I'm guessing cabs weren't around at this time?

When you think thats 20yrs ago, they were quite high priced cars.

They were quite a premium over the standard 200 & 400 models. The 216 cab seemed to always be similarly priced to the 216 Coupe.

Now add 3% inflation (or monetary devaluation, or a bit of both) compounded over 20-30 years and work out how much they would cost to make today.

MG Motor said the MG6 would cost 25K+ to make at Longbridge, hence SKDs from China at the time and a more acceptable 17-20K price range.

Would be very interesting to see what an R8 could be made for today if a large manufacturer utilised its foreign manufacturing to get it all done cheaply - but obviously like for like - no skimping or drop in quality.

Wonder if they could be made for sub 20K with all those Asian parts manufacturers today?

Apparently my Tourer would have cost £16,000 in 1996, according to Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear (clip on you Tube). A lot of money then, never mind today!
