Did a mid-facelift 400 ever exist?

#1 Post by burtonm » Thu Jun 07, 2018 2:19 am

As per the title really. 200s come up sometimes with long indicators, but grey bumpers and no grille (usually silver SLis with cloth interiors for some reason). Was the same ever true of the 400, or did it go straight from short indicators and no grille to a mustache, long indicators and that horrible facelift bumper?

The 400 received the chrome grille a year earlier than the 200. The R17 800 was launched in late 91 and the grille was generally well received and so the 400 was given the grille, mono tone paint and deeper colour coded bumpers in Autumn 92 with the intention of making it look more upmarket. It was also considerred that 400 buyers were generally older and more conservative than 200 buyers. By the following year the 600 had been launched and to unify the range, the grille was added to the 200 but at that stage still with grey bumpers (except the GTi). By 1994 they were at run out stage for the model and so the coloured bumpers and monotone paint were added to the 200. There were some odd exceptions low down the range with 214S and the later 214i having no two tone but grey bumpers.

I should have mentioned that the 400 went to mono tone and colour coded but early bumpers and short indicators a year earlier in late 91.
