Funny what you find at an autojumble...

#1 Post by GTiJohn » Sat Aug 11, 2018 4:47 pm

I think all of those that attended the BMC/BL Day at Peterborough last Sunday would have had a good rummage through the many autojumble stands but I was lucky enough to find a part that I designed - and a NOS part to boot!

The part in question is an aerodynamic undertray fitted to early R8 5-doors. It fits in the cavity behind the rear bumper in the space that the exhaust silencer fits on the other side of the car.

I was the Rover 'aero expert' onsite at Honda's Tochigi R&D facility in the summer of 1986 and I helped Pat Phipps, a Trim & Hardware engineer, design it. It reduced both rear lift and overall aero drag, Unfortunately it was deleted within 2 years of R8 production starting as a cost saving.

The part is now in the possession of Jonathan Living who will fit it to this 216 that was produced after the deletion. Jonathan also took this photo

It didn't. Diesel acoustics were lesss of a problem back then and there's not a lot of room under the XUD engine to fit one in, as it's rather tall engine - hence the up-on-stilts ride height.

I spent quite a while rummageing through Rimmers diagrams to find something, I might see if the 200 bubble and 25 had one.

And now "showing" in the current CCW. There is another excellent plug for the club in the Tomcat running report in this edition as well.
