Rover 216 s series alternator replacement

Hi iv got to replace the alternator on the rover which way is easier to get it out top or bottom ?? Iv only had a quick look tonight from the top an there’s not much room I’m guessing it’s easier out the bottom ? Cheeeeers

I would do it from the bottom

Is there anything in the way underneath that I need to remove I.e a pain to get off etc ?

You need a 13mm socket, 10mm socket, ratchet, 17mm spanner, lever bar and 13mm spanner. You should have a clip holding the plug in the back of alternator then undo 13mm bolt at the bottom of alternator, loosen the 17mm bolt on engine and undo the top bolt then it should come out. car still has the under tray that bolts on the bumper so that needs to be removed if still on your car to get alternator out the bottom

Thanks for that but looking at it properly in daylight the whole loom about a foot up has rotted all 3 wires on the plug too to the extent the wires have dropped off the plug so looks like I need a alternator loom or see if I can strip it all back and replace the wires also do you know where I can get the black plug for the alternator?? Cheers

Thank you I’ll order that now an all I have to do is solder it in instead of them bullet connectors

I might need to get a wiring diagram of which way the wires go in the plug as there’s nothing left on mine an I can’t tell

The two big red wires need too be connected to the old wires or starter/battery. The small wire goes too the battery light on dash

Ahhhh ok pretty straight forward then I’m hoping there’s a bit of good loom left for me to solder in this new bit of loom if not it’ll have to be replaced to both starter and alt an then really hoping here the little wire is good so I don’t have to trace back to the clocks but thanks for your help you’ve been a life saver

Unless you have already got one, I would suggest you don't commit to buying a new alternator until the wiring has been repaired.
The old one may actually still work when it has good wiring connected to it again.
