The R8 cut-away motorshow car is alive and well.....

#1 Post by GTiJohn » Fri Jun 13, 2014 7:19 pm

....and in Tyseley Tech college, Birmingham.

After a bit of faffing about, I finally got over there yesterday to give it a once-over with a view of getting it ready for the 25th Birthday bash and (hopefully) the NEC Classic Car show. Plus any others it can be got to.

It's kept warm and dry in a workshop and he chap from the college says it's not actually used by their students, which explains why it's in good nick. And it's still only done 10 miles.

I'm hoping to pick it up at the end of term and give it the TLC it needs to be ready for showing. Hope they've still got the key....

The tyres all hold air but the nearside sectioned doors need work on the filler panels and they're are a few dings to sort out.

As you see from the attached photos, it needs some replacement parts. Obviously:-
  • Headlining (possibly sunroof blind)
    Grill bar
    Driver's door inner cheater panel
    Wiper stalk
    Ignition barrel grommet
    OSR door badge and panel
Radio ( I might put my OE one in)
Could anybody donate any of the above please ?

Is the plan of this to make it a car again or just improve Frankenstein's monster?

I have the sunroof and blind as it comes as one unit.

I've got a grille but would need spraying and abit of fibreglass to repair a hairline crack. If the wiper stalk is the same as a 92 cabriolet I've got that too.

Hopefully I'll see it at the 25th event!

It'll have to stay a monster - there's no way of re-commissioning it - and that would remove the uniqueness :laughing2

So yes to the stalks and the grille and possibly the sunroof assy, but I'll need to look at that a little more closely as it's not a small job to replace it. Saying that, the headlining has to be changed so we're half way there!

We'll just have to work out how to unite all the bits with the car.

My thought is that I'll 'borrow' the car towards the end of July, bring it to Warwick, which gives us a couple of months to prep it.

The car's history is that is was built (un-built?) by the Rover Apprentices and then used on the UK Motorshow stand for the launch of R8. It was donated to the Heritage Centre at Gaydon who disposed of it when they had a clear out and went to Derby Tech College, I think. It was on our stand at the NEC before my time and then found this new home in B'ham but the 'owning' lecturer has since left and it now seems a bit unloved. It isn't a registered car and so isn't SORN'ed. Not sure who really owns it now......

Can anybody elaborate on the above?

Birmingham City college paid me a nominal sum for it with the proviso we could borrow it when needed. The dents in the door and ripped headlining was the same when I had it.

I can not remember the head lining being in that condition when we cleaned it.

Once the foam deteriorates the lining just droops and then it's up from grabs, literally.....

Can be relatively easily refurbished though with new material.

1234 dist :D

Early NS tail-lamp lens

Single bar grille - preferably in the early blue - Baltic?

Both stalks

I've found a 214 being broken about 50miles away so I'm off there on Sunday for the headlining.

I'll let you know what I manage to scavenge

Can you confirm images of the rear lights, pretty sure its just the orange indicators In which case I have about 12 sets.

Both stalks I'm assuming is wipers and indicator stalks? sure I have a couple.

I don't have a spare grille.
