That's inspirational work! A rather beautiful colour too, which looks too vibrant to be Nightfire. What shade is it?

Yes, it's Pearlescent Cherry Red. It was a launch colour and the first Pearlescent that was offered. It was quite a bit more expensive than a metallic paint option at the time and therefore quite rare. It's a very nice colour and it was good to see two at POL this year.

Thanks for the comments

Yes, its pearlescent cherry red - an option in 1990.

The 5-door GTi was £13,950 and the pearlescent paint option was an added £275. (Black paint was + £120 or metallic paint was + £190)

So the original price for my H696 WTV was £14,225

Just for comparison, after inflation, the same 130 bhp car would be £32,250 today.

Don't shout at me! But for that same money now you would now get a BMW 320i GT 2-litre 198 bhp 5 door hatchback, with 6-speed manual box.

I remember chewing over the options when I bought mine new in 1991. I remember pearlescent was intriguing, but I thought it would be a nightmare to match if a repair was needed. As it was, it took only a couple of weeks for what I did buy to get dinged in Tesco's.

I can see the logic in your thinking about matching it.

Although when I did need some for the lower boot area Halfords mixed up a spray can of pearlescent cherry red from the code and it looked pretty good
About £14.95 and it is computer mixed from the rover paint codes.

Not sure I would want to try it on the main body panels though!
