Rover 400 Clutch

#1 Post by Wadmiester » Tue Sep 10, 2019 7:42 pm

Hello fellow Rover owners. My first post is in regard to my much loved 400,(414 8V 1999) which seems to have a rapidly failing clutch. My problem is that the 2 different manuals I own state that the 1.4 clutch friction plate has a diameter of 190mm, but every parts site I visit offers a clutch kit with a 200mm friction plate, which the work shop manuals state is for the 1.6 engine.Aswell as 190mm doesnt seem to exist anyway ? Can anyone advise me on the correct size of plate for my car.
Cheers

Thanks for the quick reply. Going to order it now and probably fit it next week if the weather improves.
Cheers.

A quick update on my 400 clutch situation. 961tat was bang on stating the 200mm friction plate would fit no problem as the one I removed was 200mm. Im at a loss to understand why two different Haynes manuals give the spec as 190mm,but they do. The clutch was worn close to rivets and did need replacing but a much bigger problem was the thrust bearing fork had bent due to the weld holding it to the lever had cracked due to fatigue over the years adding to the already dodgy gear selection. It was an easy job to remove and I straightened and re-welded it and it was good to go. Ive had the car 5 years and didnt think it could feel any better than it did 5 years ago when I bought it but the new clutch has worked wonders and feels silky smooth on the gear changes. Im a happy chappy :D
