Re: FS Early 220 GTI in Birmingham

I love the alloy cam covers and inlet manifold on the M series. Do all M series have the water pump driven by the cam belt or do some drive it off the back of the PAS pump like the T series?

Whatever the case, that could be a lovely looking car with very little effort

I don't know, but I do know that it is exactly the kind of vehicle that is covered by the excellent Rover Sports Register

Re: How well do they age? Corrosion , seals etc..

To my mind, they are very gracefully. Rear suspension bushes are a weak spot but readily available and easy enough to change Rear brake calipers can suffer from seized handbrakes Arch corrosion is often exacerbated by plastic liners rubbing tbe paint off The imobiliser is the worst electrical issue ...

Re: R8 hatch ride quality . Steel Vs alloy .

On the subject of the effect of sidewall height on the Speedo, our 414 R8 had the typical "over reading speedo". You may well find that a higher sidewall will put the Speedo closer to reading accurately. I think ours was almost spot on after going up to a bigger size. I would recommend checking the ...

Re: R8 hatch ride quality . Steel Vs alloy .

I don't have any experience of this sort of swap on an R8 but I reckon that, like for like, steels give a better ride than alloys

We used to have a 414 on standard Rover alloys and the ride was quite harsh until we went up a size on the sidewall profile on the tyre (55 to 65)

Re: 214 Red wire from battery negative (1993 L reg)

It was definitely attached to the negative battery lead before it became detached, but it was not attached to anything at the other end. Everything seems to work, because I have tested everything in preparation for the car's MOT. If one end was detached already and now the other end is detached too...

Re: 214 Red wire from battery negative (1993 L reg)

So it is attached to the battery but goes nowhere?

Does it look like a facyory fit item or aftermarket? Is there any system on the car that doesn't work?

Can you follow the wire to see where it goes?

Re: Coolant loss - update

And it would be worth spending a tenner to get a new inlet manifold gasket. That was where our 1994 414 dprung a leak with only about 35,000 miles on the clock

That's what I'd do, too. It's a nice easy job and I always did the bolts up until it felt "snug"

First of all Thanks everyone for you helpful suggestions.

I think the fault is likely to be the solenoid as when switched off it would just keep runnong unless I stalled it.
I'd say the same - after owning several Citroen BXs (great cars)
