Saw this one. A nice classic car colour for that era. It's the EFi S-series engine, so 0-60 in a shade over 9 seconds - quick enough. All the interior looks to be there, so it's the practical rear arch replacement and underside welding and sealing that turns this into a project with a potentially very nice car as the outcome. £800 might be a bit steep with the welding and partial re-spray required - and those arches would have to be fabricated by someone with a real eye and skill as they might otherwise be difficult to find in decent quality on a scrapped car. That nearside arch is truly shocking for a car with 65K on the clock, but that's what 200 hours of salt water spray resistance at manufacture gets you.

That looks as if it could be very expensive to repair; if crust has spread along that inner sill.

Yes I saw that. It looks a bit crusty inside the wheel arch very near the suspension underpinnings, and there's a horizontal rusty split that looks like it's leading off to behind the rear squab. It could be quite a nasty area of rust, but fixable and probably worth doing for a VP model in this colour.

Bump!

Back up at £550 BIN. Either the reserve wasn't met or the buyer didn't show... (or showed up with pockets emptier than they should have been)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333200387770

In the previous advert, the seller stated they have the repair panel for the badly rotted N/S rear arch, which would make things a little easier...

Such an iconic car should be saved. As I am only 20 miles away from Prestatyn I would be interested but am put off by the rust problem. Is it really something that can be solved? I would get it to Craig if he could repair it and consider the expenditure an investment in, as I say, saving such a rare vehicle. Thoughts, anyone?

It all depends how badly rusted that sill is!

If it needs both inner and outer sills replacing, that is a major job involving removing the doors and bracing the door gaps. Are replacement panels available?, are the floor pans sound?
It's a lot more difficult than replacing a front or rear wing for example.

With a contingency element built in, I would say budget some where between £1k to £2k. Not every bodyshop will be willing to take that sort of work on, so shopping around will be necessary. Could be done as a fall back job when more bread & butter work dries up and might attract a better hourly rate on that basis.

I've just re-read the advert, the rear arch is a real mess, I would suspect that taking all that back to clean steel will reveal far more rot; it's quite likely to cost more than it's ever going to be worth unfortunately. The rot seems to have spread around the floor pan. Did they all do that or is this a bad un?
All important questions to pose before committing to what could become a very big job imo.

It's back up again at 450 now, he doesn't let the add run for long.

The thing that suggests it won't be catastrophic is the 65K (assumed genuine) mileage. It *can't* have rotted that badly having done such modest mileage... surely? I know the rust proofing is about 20% of that on an R8, but still - it looks visually very poor - but how many have you seen with much higher mileage that don't look that bad. It must have been parked right next to a rainwater downspout or something.

I suppose if the outer sill has gone and there's been years of salty water ingress to the inner sill, your worst fears might be true. It really needs someone who can assess the work to go and look at it along with the potential buyer.

Anything can be fixed, but at what price? Watch Car SOS and see a bare shell stripped with soda blasting to reveal mostly just rust all the way through and so many holes it looks like swiss cheese. They manage to fabricate the lot by hand - quite amazing - but oh, the cost - if they weren't doing it for free (or rather, for less than the on-air programme is sold for).

Really needs plenty of detailed photos and explanation to someone who can quote if you can't get them to see the car. Could be a quick inner weld and an outer arch welded in, some addition fab, a touch of filler and a large area re-spray with blend into the original paintwork. Could be £400 to £500 - could be double that.

Sale price if it's all complete and tip-top could be over 2 grand - it's top of the range in terms of trim and performance. There was no better SD3. Okay, so it isn't a Vitesse, but that was for boy racers and I'm not sure the Vitesse had such a plush interior with quite as many options as this one has.

Now £450 BIN, or make an offer...
