ROVER-CX8 1.8k Turbo Cabby Project - The Quest for Knowlage

#1 Post by ROVER-25X » Tue Feb 13, 2018 11:26 pm

I originally posted this topic on RoverTech as a means to get info for my 1.8 Turbo conversion on the Cabby, its been a bit quiet on
the thread which may be because the RT forum is a bit on the quiet side at the moment so going to post on here and see how it goes. :clapping

In a nutshell, this is basically a quest for knowledge on my build and conversion but just so
you know I have a 1997 ROVER Cabriolet 1.6 K-Series, it is in a very tidy condition for 20
years old and just needs some suspension work as its made of custard at the moment.

The list of jobs has grown and i'll basically be doing a full resto as this car is a keeper, it
did have a waterpump failure last year so the pump, head gasket and cambelt got swapped
etc, while it was in bits we threw 135 cams and a 160 inlet manifold on it but it ran like a
dog, it was only after putting it back stock that it we found a duff vac hose but such is life.

The next step was to do this all gain but convert it to MEMS3, after weighing it up I decided
to drop a 1.8 Turbo into it to make all the work worth while, i'll save the 135 Cams and the 160
inlet manifold for my 1.4 25 and waste them on that *laughs*.

This is not some pipe dream, I have all the new suspension and uprated anti roll bars, the 1.8
turbo lump and loads of other stuff like Audi RS3 heated leather Recaros, I will not be rushing
this project, it will take years before it goes on the road, I and just going to take my time, no
schedules or dates etc.

Here's the turbo lump.

I'll be posting questions below regarding this build and any answers or advice you can give
will be most appreciated, feel free to ask about the build too. Image

CLUTCH: I have spotted a few of you who run the T-Series have put an L-Series Diesel
clutch in the PG1 gearbox, is this something I should look into as I have been told by
K-MAPS that once they do me a MEMS3 remap to run the engine it should be at least
180bhp ?

Drew: Not sure why people put diesel clutches in. Maybe because of price? Original t turbo clutch will do more than that engine.

Is the derv clutch tougher ?

Millerae: Why not pop the 135 cams in it as well? Worth a few extra ponies up top and you'd barely notice lower down with the torque of the turbo.

Millerae I posed the question of 135 cams and the 160 inlet to K-MAPS and they
said not to bother unless I was doing a performance internal swap as the gains
are negligible, I think the Turbo does all the work on that engine were as on a
NASP they give you a bit more poke.

Even with the forums and facebook groups the 1.8 Turbo is not as straight forward as
you think, its the little bits of info that get left out of guides and project threads that
can make it a balls up but i'm getting there, I have now acquired a great deal of info for
this engine swap, this includes:

Which OEM ECU to use
Which Gearbox
Rear Subframe
Plumbing in the coolant pipes with the turbo

Getting there now.

Ok I have a couple more questions folks.

I was reading some old topics, do I need to get a Fuel Rail Adaptor so I can fit an adjustable
Fuel Pressure Regulator ?

I have the one from Temple Tuning on ebay saved.

Also, I need ECU clarification, I am going with an OEM unit as i'm just going to leave the engine
stock so not much need for an aftermarket unit, I just need to know exactly which one I need
so I can use the 75/ZT boost control unit, am I right that I need a MEMS3 MGF/TF Steptronic
(Auto) ECU as it has an extra feed used for the gearbox that the boost controller can use ?

ECU Model Number: NNN100783 ?

I will have more questions but if anyone can help with this I would appreciate it. :D

Yes that's right Stepspeed ECU with a 1.1 pressure reg, use a MEM's 3 fuel rail with ZT injectors. Pin 48 is pulse for boost control just need to add wires and use the K Maps tune

Excellent, many thanks, I have already got the notes on the fuel rail situation but thank you for clarifying the reg setup.
