Rover 420i cutting out when cold.

Its developed its first fault after two trouble free months! Its ran a bit lumpy for the first few minutes on the first drive of the day since I picked it up. Its fine after that and after sitting for 8 hours in work car park also fine. But the last 3 mornings its cut out outside exactly the same house round the corner from me. Ive know its going to happen even if I keep the revs up in second I can feel it loosing power and it cuts out. Also becomes difficult to start again but eventually does then is spot on the rest of the day. Any ideas? Cheers in advance, Andy.

I’ve had a similar problems with my T series, but not to the point of cutting out.

However I have done the following:

* Cleaned throttle body with carb cleaner.
* Removed and cleaned vacuum pipes.
* New plugs/leads.

Much better now. One thing that I also want to do, because mine is hesitant when cold, especially in cold weather, is replace the coolant temperature sensor. I saw somewhere that this can also give these symptoms, but I haven’t got round to doing it yet.

Hi thanks for the advice. It didn't do it this morning was fine although it was an unusually warm for 5:30am on a Novembers morning today! The three bullet points have been done by the previous owner around 2000 miles ago. (1000 by him and I have done a 1000 since getting it, this is the car in question in this thread https://www.rover200.org.uk/forums/view ... =2&t=12206 The owner documented and dated a list of work that he did to re-commission it including the bullet point suggestions. No mention of a new coolant temperature sensor though. Has anyone got the part number for this please. I have had a look on rimmer bros and cant find it. Cheers Andy.

I would give it an Italian Tune Up; a regular shot of fuel injection cleaner and only fill up at a BP/SHELL/ESSO pump.

Clogged injectors might not be the only issue you have, does the engine hunt on start up? or is it cutting out after 5 minutes say?

Try opening the throttle slightly as you turn it over.

Hi, I will try the fuel injector cleaner as well. Only gets filled up with v power like all my cars, habit of mine always had performance cars, got a 335i atm as well as run arounds so end up putting vpower in the lot ha. No idles perfect. Cuts out after 60-70 seconds but I know soon as its in gear whether or not its going to cut out. Have started pressing the throttle on start up. Have to do that with the the maestro turbo but that's carb not fuel injection. Although its the same block, good old rover!

Had another look there for coolant temp sensor, looks like the part number is ADU7161 and fits every austin/rover ever made from maestro o series to 200 k series. Has anyone ever had any problems for the cheaper ones from eBay? Ail fit one see if cures the problem.

Ordered the cheaper one a few days back. I will report back after a week or so to tell if there are any improvements. Noticed that this week its only done it twice and that's when I have had the heating on from starting to demist the windows. when I haven't needed to demist the windows it hasn't. Still running lumpy and lack of power till warm though.

Coolant temperature sensor is often a good bet - but so is the rotor arm. Many are poor quality and short out after running for a while. They get warm, short circuit and then die but function properly again when they cool down.

Of course that doesn't apply if you have one with the twin coil pack, rather than a distributor, and doesn't really sound like your problem.

When was the fuel filter last changed? Do you park on a slope which may cause sludge/dirt to build up in a fuel line?
