Start with the easy fix first, the cap is a common fault and can cause all the issues you have listed so far.

Absolute worst case, even if it’s hgf it’s £100 in parts and 2hrs to fix, and a skim if needed.

Hi , I had thought pouring this stuff into my engine maybe a bad move :unsure but I thought I would get other people`s opinion`s first . Replaced cap Tuesday but pushed out coolant last night :headbanging and slightly more brown stuff in expansion tank , but oil filler cap and dipstick still clean and no overheating ? :S

Is coolant circulating as it should be? That is if you start from cold and idle until warm, do you feel heat creeping across the radiator, and is there a dribble through the small return hose to the header tank?

Thermostat next port of call, still a nice easy fix you can do your self with just an 8mn socket.

Yep thermostat next , twice the car has taken longer than normal to get up to temp maybe sticking thermo ? . Would this cause the expansion tank to overflow ? . Anybody heard of or used a Headgasket testing kit you use on the expansion tank ie place a bung into the top of tank with a tube coming out of bung partly filled with a blue dye ,run the car until warm if any exhaust gases pass through into tube blue dye turns green thus telling you the Headgasket has gone .Its something I heard today . Is it just a myth? Ive never heard of this .

yes it reacts with the exhaust gases in the water.

Sticking thermos would cause blow backs in the bottle due to not putting water through the radiator to cool it.

Don't drain the heater; so turn the heat to cold. Run it with the expansion tank cap off from cold & watch the level.

Then take it for a short run, wait till hot, then plenty of revs, let it cool and check the level, then keep an eye on it fo r the next week or so.

You are taking a pipe out of the middle of the cooling system, no, you'll get air locks.
