Driveshaft noise 220 turbo

#1 Post by patrick_church » Tue Oct 12, 2021 7:55 pm

Hi All,
I have a 94 220 gsi turbo hatch which I've owned since 1997.
It only does about 200 to 400 miles a year now that it's no longer my daily.
Recently passed MOT after a nearside front wheel bearing.
I was hoping that this would make go away a noise from the front passenger side that has persisted for years, but sadly not.
I'm now thinking it could be a driveshaft issue and I have one to hand, a remanufactured unit I bought years ago.
But this remanufactured driveshaft does not have the harmonic damper fitted....one of which I also have 😊

To fit it, I obviously need to split one of the joints, and having had troubles knocking joints off a shaft in the past, I want the job to be as easy as possible, therefore my question is this, typically, which joint is likely to be the easiest to knock off, the inner or outer and is it even possible to fit the damper from the inner joint end!?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

You may find that the remanufacturing process has reduced the diameter of the shaft slightly
from the factory figure, and the damper will not fit snugly.

Thanks buddy,
I'll bear that in mind Do you know which is the best website/forum to get a bit more activity than this one, as I was hoping to to get a few more answers, but I'm wondering if anyone's still on here much 😞

I have done mine , the best way is to take off the outer joint in a vice is easy make sure you put put new c clips on when you build back up then slide on the damper if ithe shaft s a smaller dia I have used bike inner tube or insulation tape to build up then the metal clip still on my car after 4 year and no vibration hope that helps

Thanks for that. How do you get the replacement C clip on without bending it open so wide that you knacker it? Is there a trick to it?

For what it's worth, I completely agree with 961tat. It's been many years since I did the job, but as I remember I used exactly the same technique as he has suggested - although I didn't have any problem with the shaft diameter, as it was a new one. Just make sure the cv has a soft landing when you tap it off the driveshaft.
