214 SEi HGF?

So this 214 SEi I bought unseen.... it’s a lovely car but there’s oil in the header tank.

The oil is clean, and there’s no mayo under the oil cap.

However there was a smidgen of mayo under the coolant cap, and there is a layer of oil on top of the coolant in the header tank.

Is this forced to be he head gasket? Obviously I took the risk of buying the car unseen, and I’m quite prepared to get it done (or even do It myself), but what does everyone think of the symptoms?

I’d either get it done at the local garage or would anyone be up for a session helping and be furnished with tea and biscuits, beer and sandwiches?!

Spoke to Craig and Howard who have both given some good tips! Would be nice to get it done, as it’s a low mileage car in good condition and I’d like to get it back on the road :)

Is the any history or sign off the head having been done in the past. If so a good coolant flush and cleanout might have been missed and could be all it needs.

An instance has been recorded of a HG being replaced, but forgetting the hollow dowel the pressurised oil uses to get to the head...

Good point Kevin, could just be a flush. The service booked is marked up to about 35,000 miles, and it’s on 49k now, and was advised it was serviced annually despite the low annual mileage, by a local mechanic. No record of the HG but will find out.

Is that a part that should have been swapped if it has been done?

I’d certainly get involved if I were closer-to be honest from your description it does sound like HGF. I’d use the opportunity to get it done whilst changing the cambelt etc-no doubt this will probably be due on time anyway, and if you’re changing the cambelt you’re almost halfway there anyway...

As far as I’m concerned the mileage denotes the reason the change the gasket, all the other symptoms are just fuel to the fire.

Better to do it now while it’s easy to clean than when all pipes are full of mayo.

Cheers mate. It’s going to need some time and money putting into it.
