None starting Rover 45 Diesel 2003

#1 Post by RoverTD » Wed Dec 11, 2019 1:06 pm

Looking for help.
I have had the battery on charge due to running low with short journeys. It was locked with the charger connected directly to the battery and bonnet on the latch as outside. Opened the bonnet and disconnected charger , a few seconds later alarm went off & as I hadn't got keys with me, it timed out after about 30 seconds. Unlocked car with remote and tried to start. Cranked over briskly but didn't fire. Noticed heater plugs light didn't illuminate even for a short while. Temperature 11 C. Locked & unlocked car with remote plus Disconnected battery and reconnected , no change. I realised afterwards that I had disconnected charger leads to battery while charger still powered up. I wondering if immobiliser compromised !!
Any thoughts to help. Thanks

Get a good charge in the battery before even trying.

If the amperage isn’t there glow plugs won’t even try to warm up.

Get diagnostic computer on it then as I’d say your glow plugs have failed.

Solved . there was no power to Engine ECU , AA found a poor connection to a fuse in under dash fuse box . . At least I didn't have to grovel under the dash in the rain.

Problem has reappeared so will need to get at all the relevant connections to check them, waiting for the rain to cease . Are the connectors beneath the under bonnet fuse box known to be venerable? :sad

I have experienced people on their knees beside their Rovers, but whether worship was involved I could not say.

Hopefully problem solved. There was a small area of corrosion in one wire ( Black/Green) between the fuse box ( RELAY) and the engine management ECU (pin 58) . I had determined there was no continuity between the two ends and was in the process of bypassing that wire altogether and noticed a small area of swelling in the insulation near the connector to the fuse box. Bingo , green corrosion about 2mm long had eaten all the stands. Cut it out and replaced with a small 30 mm long bridge wire and car started straight up.

Just to complete the story, the repair left the Engine management light on. There were a couple of communication errors listed and after clearing, the light has stayed out after a number of engine stop & starts , trust it stays that way for a while!
Thanks for everyone's input. Still running OK
