Winter Blues

#1 Post by Rover dave » Sat Dec 14, 2019 4:36 pm

Went to start my car 5.30am yesterday battery was 100% dead , battery was bought new in Jan of this year and has been no bother in the past . A friend of mine checked the charging rate and said it was only 13volts so I have bought a second hand alternator from a local breakers yard as a stop gap as I need my car Monday morning . Once I got the alternator home I noticed it had a larger pulley than mine :cursing can I just swap the pulleys over are all k series 16v alternators the same? :unsure . Forgot to say the ign light no longer lights up on the dash at all since I`ve had this problem . Any advice please . :)

You can just change the wheel but if the diameter is much bigger than originally you’ll have issues putting the belt back on.

It sounds like your failed alternator is the original Lucas one. If the replacement one you have is the MGR era bosch unit, just swap the pulley over. The altenator itself will physically fit unless they have given you one for cars with A/C.

Had a go at alternator today turns out the breakers yard have given me the wrong one!! :cursing mine has a large black plug at the back, the other one has not . Couldn`t check at the time as there is cover over the back of my alternator with the part number uam7498. .Also checked bulb in dash as I was told it still light up or glow a bit with a faulty alternator (bulb ok) anyone know different ? . Bulb never lights up since this fault even when you first put key in ign :unsure . Thanks .
