#1 Post by Roverlike » Fri May 29, 2020 7:54 am

I have a question if somebody knows for ceratin if Rover 200 R3 and Rover 25 power steering racks are identical even they have different part numbers? Question is for petrol engine and 15" wheels in both cases.

They're quite different and not easily interchangable.

The R3 uses basically the R8 steering rack which features an unusual, and therefore expensive to produce, 'valve under' design with a 'Positive Centre Feel' C-spring arrangement.

The 25 rack design did away with the PCF feature and moved to a more common, and cheaper, 'valve over' design. This means that more of the power steering gubbins is above the centre-line of the steering rack and needs a lager diameter hole in the rear subframe and in the toe-board area of the bulkhead.

It is possible to fit a 25 rack but you need to take the subframe, PAS pipes and bulkhead seal too and be prepared to do a bit of metal-cutting to the bulkhead.

The steering column doesn't need to modified in any way though.

(One advantage of the swap is to remove the PCF feature, as the C-spring is prone to breaking, resulting in very light steering and necessitating a rack change... :slapme )

The R8 and R3 use the same style of rack which is a fair bit different as described above. I fitted a ZR rack and sub frame to my R8 using the column, rack etc from the ZR. Was a bit of a job tho had to cut away a fair amount of the bulk head and floor to do it and make a new mounting panel :scared

These pics might help

Looks like the lower UJ is in a different position to me so you might need the matching steering column as well to make the change, as JOHNDQ did.

Thank you for all the info and pictures. I will stick with original setup as I am not prepared to take such huge job of conversion for an everyday car.
