1997 1.6K Cabrio not starting

#1 Post by montegoman » Thu Aug 20, 2020 6:57 pm

I have been contacted by a club member who is not on the forum. He has a 1997 1.6 K series that is refusing to start. He has owned the car for some time and it became difficult to start last week and now will not start at all. The immobiliser light goes off and he can hear the fuel pump priming. The engine spins over and tries to fire but won't pick up. He has replaced the crank sensor. He says he has checked the coil and it is indicating the correct voltage.
He does his own maintenance and is savvy with most technical stuff but is looking for advice. Is there anyone who would be willing to give him a call to discuss items to check please?
He lives in the South Wales valleys.

I nearly said plugs. It might be worth trying to ascertain where the vehicle has been parked recently, as we have had a lot of rain in a short amount of time which might show up in all the worn/old components you've mentioned as a damp start problem.

Distributor rotor arms are a surprisingly common cause of problems
