How do u refit a window?

#1 Post by henryiett » Thu Jan 28, 2021 11:27 am

A few years ago I winded the drivers window down and it jammed and fell out, it like I need to refit it because mould is starting to appear in the interior

Like I'm hoping the door card doesn't need to come off

I'm afraid that that is the only way to establish which component needs repair or replacement, and to access it to do the job.

If you don't already have one, I would advise you to buy a Haynes manual covering the 214.

Used ones are readily available on eBay or Amazon for less than £10 and will help you to learn a lot about your car.

R8s are definitely not difficult/complicated cars to work on, but even those of us who do a lot of maintenance and repair work find it useful to have a look in a manual before tackling a job we haven't done before (or recently!)

The window glass has a couple of brackets bonded to it, which then bolt on to the mechanism that is driven by the window regulator (the winder). When you have the door card removed, you will be able to look through some of the access holes inside the door to see what has happened.

Invest in some replacement clips before you start as they're bound to break being so brittle over time. Getting off is easier than putting back on in my experience. Just need a little patience and jiggling :laughing2

Last time I looked the blue pegs were out of stock at Rimmers, although that was some time ago.

There are two major points of failure:
1] winder mechanism has seized, through rain ingress
2] as Paul touches on the bond between bracket and glass fails, possibly because on assembly the adhesive is not in the right place.

On reassembly locktite the screws between regulator/winder that secure it to the door frame.

It's neither its what happened was the mechanism had become loose and pushed it out of alignment

Jonny216GSI is the man for this, I believe he researched alternatives to the blue pegs that locate the door cards.

Hi I've also been having a problem with my drivers window. When you raise it back up it comes out of its runners and there is a big gap round the top. I've taken door panel off and tried adjusting the runners both front and back but it seems to make little or no difference. Does anyone have any advice?

Keep playing with the alignment - try looking for a ghost of the where the bolts holding the glass was originally - shiny paint or shadows from the washers. Chances are they moved at some point when loose and then you have had a go at them too. They only need a small amount of movement to make quite a difference. might help to disconnect the window from the motor or winder using these white plastic clips (which everyone else moans about) but I have only ever had one break on me on my cars but have repaired several on other cars. Have had a few come detached from glass but sikaflex or tiger grip sorts this when attached and left closed overnight.
I have also used a small amount of silicon spray to help the window move in the runners. Might also be worth looking at the opposite handed door to see if it has washer spacers between the door and the runners inside which may have dropped out or been removed by helpful previous owners. The can help with the in and out alignment on some cars but cant remember off the top of my head now if the rovers have this.
Suspect it needs a patient afternoon which is not a helpful suggestion as it will get you down when it does not work. Have taken quite a few in and out and only had the one try to escape at the rear edge of the OSF drivers door of the 5 door.
