Picked up another R8 3 door

#1 Post by JOHNDQ » Sat Jan 30, 2021 2:03 pm

So ive found myself with another R8 :laughing2 This one is for the possible MG Cup 216 GTi build. Some of you may have heard about this car, its the red GTi that has been re-shelled using a 220 for some unknown reason so has conflicting chassis numbers. Ive checked both VIN numbers though HPI and police data base and none came back as stolen and the MOT's from 07,08,09 have used both VIN numbers under same reg as its been like this for a long time :scared Anyway as said i got this for scrap valve with the understanding if i dont use it as the basis as the race car and break it the shell will be destroyed. The car is very solid with just a bit of the normal tin worn under the body kit and the drivers door and the mounts have been welded to a good standard from what i can see and in the correct places as measured from my 5 door GTi....

Once the car was home i starting by trying to get it running, First i removed the after market alarm to get car cracking over etc but still no start :slapme Next was to check the basics, had oil, spark vacuum but no fuel. Much same as the car GTi a dead fuel pump so i added in my line pump but still no fuel... very strange. I disconnected a fuel injector and plugged in a LED bulb, cracked car over to which i had a injection pulse from ecu but still no fuel entering the cylinders :blink Next i decided to remove a fuel pipe from tank to see what was in there and found this :laughing2 ....

And to the obvious conclusion the fuel injectors where blocked so i removed the fuel rail, injectors and there filter bowls and took them to work for a bath in the ANSU cleaner....

You're a busy fella :clapping

You've said you have to scrap the shell but would it be possible to cut out the sill and lower side sections a couple of feet in front of the rear wheels before it goes please? :angel

They would come in very handy to use as templates for any new panels we might want to get re-manufactured. These are the areas that go first and finding good ones is getting increasingly difficult.

I only have to scrap the car mate if I don't use the shell for racing. I'm still 50/50 on the vehicle at the minute I would ideally like to find an original Honda 3-door shell to use but as I'm sure you're well aware trying to find one of those is very difficult. Rest assured oh I will be keeping everybody informed of what's going on in this thread

The fact your starting off with a reshelled car already makes it suitable as a Dunlop car :laughing2

Look forward to seeing progress.

Had a late one getting the engine out of the fake GTi last night :laughing2 Due to no sills and the questionable history this one will had to go for scrap in afraid.... This was the agreement i had when i got the car if didnt use it as race car shell it would have to be scrapped and unfortunately the corrosion is to bad to make it worth saving and its also had quite a bad hit to the offside rear at some point

Hi mate saw your message so I'll reply now :wink3 Tailgate is good but needs painting, bonnet ok but has rust starting behind grill on inner edge, doors gone on bottoms bad, front subframe holed, not checked rear frame yet but it's a non power steering frame, Im holding on to bumpers, front lights and rubbing strips etc mate as I imagine they will be the parts that get damaged on circuit :laughing2 again tho they all need painting as they have the original colours coming though. Looks like at some point it's had a real cheap and poor blow over

Ok guys I'm stripping this car this week so I just thought I'd ask before it's goes to scrap. If anyone wants the BEAR shell I'm happy for them to have it but I'd need it gone really within a week really (two at most) from Bedford (MK42) I don't have any documentation with this vehicle and as you may know the chassis number comes back as a 220 not a 216 GTI. The shell needs new outer sills and repairs to nearside inner sill the wheel arches etc from what I can see are quite good
