Why does my wiper catch on the bonnet

#1 Post by Vinny1979 » Mon May 06, 2019 5:34 pm

Been meaning to ask for 10 years

Why when I open the bonnet on any 200 does it catch on the wipers

They all do that, Sir !

Seriously - the thought was the bearing in the wiper mount - it gets worn and sits in a more elevated position by virtue of the spring-loading in the wiper arm. Would make sense I suppose, as the arm only travels through about 90 degrees and there's constant pressure on the bearing for just 1/4 of its turn.

Having said that, you could try another wiper arm. I swapped mine and the problem went away, so I'm not entirely sure it is related just to the bearing.

New ones didn't. My view is that the die-cast component out to the knuckle creeps under the continuous reaction to the pressure on the wiper blade, over a long period, and so curls away from the glass enough to catch. Atmospheric temperature cycling might not help either. I did bend one of mine back when I repainted it, but it didn't stay put for very long, almost as though the metal had lost some strength.

Regarding the bearing: When I smartened up various metalwork under the bonnet, I also took the wiper linkage out, dismantled it and renewed the bearing sleeves. The originals were oilite, all I could find were glacier or similar. Despite reducing the spindle slack, it didn't really improve the interference with the bonnet.

I press the knuckles down now as I raise or lower the bonnet. Bit of a pain.

I'm with you Jonathan. I managed to get a new drivers side arm for No. 1 and it cleared the bonnet. My paint shop man managed to bend the passenger side arm enough to make it clear the bonnet. I had contemplated doing that before but I thought it would snap.
It is feature that has been carried over to the R3. My wife's 25 was fine when it was new but after 100K, both wiper arms catch the bonnet.

They're NLA, so it's down to finding better used ones.

I've got one that does not touch the bonnet at all (190K) and one (250K) that does so low mileage or age does not seem the be the issue as both are coming on 30 years old now. Always thought it was the worn wiper mechansism but the one that does have been touching for at least 100K and not got any worse so it cannot be this. Must just be the arm strength I guess. If it keeps touching it at least keeps knowing the rust off!

Rimmers seem to have some available on the cheap, unless I am highlighting the wrong one.

Wonder if 25/ZR arms would be an option, I may fit some and see.

Those are Left-Hand-Drive coupe ones.

Always wondered why LHD cars have specific windscreen wipers - maybe there's something about the pressure the "drivers side" wiper exerts on the blade to ensure it definitely cleans the screen?

Both my R8s do this but only on the driver's side - 420 has 117K, 214 around 60K.

Would like a fix if possible.

Wondering if just cleaning up the spindle threads and the mounting hole on the arms would help to get them closer.

I’ve had a few R8’s and only had the problem on the early models. Later M/N reg ones never had this issue.

I fixed it on my low mileage 416 by swapping the wiper arms from an M reg 216 that was being broken for spares.

Because the driver's view is on the other side of the windscreen, hence the wipers facing the other way. The wiper arms are angled for better reach. I speak from experience, owning both left and right hand drive R8s.
